Celebrities

I have decided to compile a list of some of my most memorable celebrity encounters. They are not in chronological order.

1. David Beckham. David popped into Borders while I was working there a couple of times and was always very polite and low key. He only ever had one security guard with him and SMELT AMAZING. Well done David.

2. Barbara Windsor. I met Babs before she got her role on Eastenders at the opening of a Wyevale Garden Centre in St Albans. I was only around 7 or 8 at the time but I was already a big fan. My granny's idea of childcare was a box of Carry On videos and homemade chips (yum). My favourites were Carry On Henry and Carry On Up The Khyber - cinematic excellence I think you'll agree. Anyway, Babs was lovely and just as you would expect, she gave me a hug and everything.

3. Alan Titchmarsh. Alan was signing copies of his new fiction book (can't remember the title) in Borders on a day I was working. It was coming up to my Mother's birthday so I decided to get him to sign a Happy Birthday message to her in the front of his new book. He was TINY but nice enough. Unfortunately the Titchmarsh fan club can't have got the memo because not many people turned up. But he stayed for a couple of hours looking lonesome, good on ya Alan.

4. Emma Bunton. This final addition to my list was not a pleasant encounter. After atleast a decade of Spice Girl worship (I'm not ashamed) I finally got to meet one of my musical heroes at a local open farm where I was working in the coffee shop.

I eagerly enquired what Ms Bunton would like from the selection and receieved a reply "One Belgian bun". That's right, Bunton wanted a bun. But not just any bun, after selecting the one closest to my tongs I plated the bun and passed it to Baby Spice. She then gave me a withering stare only to remark that this particular bun was not up to her high bun-standards. Apparently a small amount of icing had stuck to the bun tray and not remained intact to the rest of the bun. I replaced it with another and she did not thank me at all. She was RUDE and looked about 20 years older than she does on the telly. I knew there was a reason Geri was my fave.

Gis a job.

According to the latest figures (and the BBC new website) graduate unemployment has risen by 25%. Although, thankfully for me, more women than men seem to be getting their first graduate job. Unfortunately for me, I am still unemployed. This is the longest I have gone without working since I started my first job at 15.

I have had to visit my local Jobcentre and try and explain to a very bewildered man what a 'creative' is and how they don't advertise on the jobseekers website for vacancies. The Jobcentre thinks I should work at a new store opening in St Albans - Poundworld. Enough said.

Although all I want is a placement at a top 20 London advertising agency, I am realistic. My overdraft is the size of a small country and to be honest, I lose a little more self-respect everytime I have to ask my mother for a bus fare. I need a part-time job to tide me over. Something easy, like retail or admin that I can work around my portfolio homework. Ideally I would love a summer job at a local agency, but they don't seem to like replying to e-mails. Perhaps I should send them some cakes.....

After handing out multiple CVs and talking to various managers I have realised that as soon as these businesses hear the word 'graduate' they run a mile. They don't want some over-qualified, self-important student who will desert them at the hint of a decent job. No, they want a spotty 16-year-old who'll stay with them for 4 years on minimum wage because they don't know any better.

There was an article in this weeks Sunday Times Magazine explaining this graduate plight:

"The only jobs they've (the Jobcentre) got are office, shops or bar work - those kind of jobs don't like taking on graduates; they know as soon as a graduate gets a better offer, they'll leave. So they'd rather take someone less qualified who'll stay."

"...How frustrating it is to come out of college with a degree and huge debts and get turned down for jobs they could have walked into at 16."

To conclude, know anyone who can give me a job?

Busy Bees

Vicky and I have been REALLY busy with our final deadline, which is next Tuesday! We've also (along with everyone one our course) been helping to build our final show...

It looks like a giant black maze at the moment, but soon it will be displaying some beautiful ads. Our show opens on the 4th of May until the 18th if anyone fancies visiting.

We have also been getting on with our self-promo film and I think we might have finally completed it! After 6 re-shoots we are finally satisfied. I will of course upload the final film on here when complete. Today we also helped out with Josie & Megan's self-promo...

...Which also looks like its gonna be a funny one!

Self-Promo

Vicky and I are currently shooting our self-promotional film for the 6th time. Our strategy is to show the opposite of us. I shall upload when its all finished and wonderful.

I came across this film to promote the post-grad advertising course in Watford. Made me chuckle. Its a really great idea - you can tell because I'm jealous that we didn't think of it for our film first!

Death By Doritos

Vicky and I are currently editing our Doritos ad. This is involving A LOT of rendering and trying to master After Effects and Premier. You may have heard about the competition. Lets hope we win £200k ! We decided we might as well have a got at it as we're filming our self promotional film at right now as well - kill two birds with one stone and all that...

Our filming involved a lot of broken crisps and me getting my hands covered in 'Mild Salsa' dip, yum. We will of course upload it to this blog when the deadline has passed for everyone to see, along with our self-promo which is onto its 5th re-shoot!

Everyone on our course is making a self promo film and they will all be shown on our final show preview night, back to back, in the Lincoln Odeon, how very glamorous. We're hoping that ours will be a little bit different to everyone else's, but we'll have to wait and see.
